Gary A. Schnabel, RN, RPh, Oregon Pharmacist, Assumes Chair of NABP 2010-2011 Executive Committee, Receives President's Award

Gary Schnabel, RN, RPh, immediate past president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®), assumed the office of chairperson of the Association’s 2010-2011 Executive Committee during the Final Business Session of the NABP 106th Annual Meeting, held May 22-25, 2010, in Anaheim, CA. Mr Schnabel served one-year terms as the Association’s president, president-elect, and treasurer, and four years as an Executive Committee member representing District 7.

During his presidency, Mr Schnabel spearheaded NABP actions that will realize the future vision of pharmacists as the primary providers of medication therapy. For his service, NABP bestowed its President’s Award upon Mr Schnabel during the Annual Awards Dinner at the Annual Meeting.

Mr Schnabel was named executive director of the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy in 1999. Prior to that, he was the Board’s compliance director from 1994 to 1999. Prior to joining the Board, he held positions such as pharmacy manager, director of pharmacy, and director of intravenous services in various pharmacy practice settings. Mr Schnabel also owned an independent pharmacy consulting practice from 1990 to 1995.

An active member of NABP, Mr Schnabel has participated in several committees and task forces including the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws, the Task Force on Active/Associate Membership, where he served as the Executive Committee liaison, and the Task Force on Telepharmacy and the Implementation of the Medicare Drug Benefit Medication Therapy Management Provisions.

Among his other activities, Mr Schnabel has served on the Task Force to Improve the Care of Terminally Ill Oregonians, convened by Oregon Health Sciences University, the 69th Legislative Assembly’s Task Force on Pain and Symptom Management, and the Board of Pharmacy Community Based Care Pharmacy Committee. In addition, Mr Schnabel was a part of the Oregon Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Oregon Health Care Quality Corporation. He has been an active member of the Oregon State Pharmacy Association, serving as vice president in 1990 and on the House of Delegates from 1984 to 1985 and 1994 to 1995. He has also been a member of the Oregon Society of Hospital Pharmacists, now known as the Oregon Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Oregon Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.

Through his service as NABP president, Mr Schnabel has enabled the Association to persist in its mission to protect public health. Through his leadership and support, NABP has accomplished significant work that will progress the future vision of pharmacists as the primary providers of medication therapy.

Mr Schnabel holds a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Oregon State University.
