Florida House Considers Legislation to Fight Pill Mills

Topics: Controlled substances and Prescription monitoring program

In Florida, legislation aimed to fight unscrupulous pain clinics, or “pill mills,” is being considered by the state House of Representatives. After revisions, including the removal of a provision that would have repealed the state’s prescription drug monitoring program law, the bill (HB 7095) was passed by the Florida House Appropriations Committee. As revised, the bill would prohibit most physicians from dispensing controlled substances and require that such prescriptions are dispensed by pharmacies, as noted by the Miami Herald. The bill would also require pharmacies to report controlled substance prescription data to the state within seven days. Governor Rick Scott has voiced his support for the bill. As reported in the March 25, 2011 NABP e-News, federal legislation intended to fight pill mills is currently being considered and has been referred to a US House committee.
