FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan to Deliver Keynote Address at NABP's Fall Legislative Conference
Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, commissioner, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will kick off NABP's 2003 Fall Legislative Conference (FLC), September 14-16, 2003, at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel held in Washington, DC. During his keynote address, Dr McClellan, who has worked closely with the current Bush administration, will speak about issues pertaining to FDA and pharmacy regulation. The programming at the FLC, held every four years in Washington, DC, will focus on timely and relevant issues such as electronic prescriptions and electronic signatures, state controlled substance monitoring programs, technician diversion and monitoring, and updates on the privacy rules related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
During 2001 and 2002, Dr McClellan served in the White House as a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, where he advised on domestic economic issues. During this time, he also served as a senior policy director for health care and related economic issues at the White House. FDA commissioner since 2002, Dr McClellan was appointed by the unanimous decision of the United States Senate. Prior to joining FDA, Dr McClellan was associate professor of economics at Stanford University, associate professor of medicine at Stanford Medical School, a practicing internist, and director of the Program on Health Outcomes Research at Stanford University.
Dr McClellan's research studies have addressed measuring and improving the quality of health care, the economic and policy factors influencing medical treatment decisions and health outcomes, estimating the effects of medical treatments, technological change in health care and its consequences for health and medical expenditures, and the relationship between health and economic well-being. He has twice received the Arrow Award for Outstanding Research in Health Economics. Dr McClellan earned his MD degree from the Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Division of Health Sciences and Technology and his PhD in economics from MIT. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and is board-certified in Internal Medicine.
