FDA Commissioner, DEA Administrator to Share Insights, Expertise at NABP Fall Legislative Conference

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP® ) welcomes Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Andrew C. von Eschenbach, MD, and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Karen P. Tandy, JD, to speak at its Fall Legislative Conference. On September 17, Dr von Eschenbach will discuss the current state of FDA as well as future issues of focus for the agency. Ms Tandy will speak to attendees about DEA’s activities and important issues related to controlled substances on September 18.

As the 20th commissioner of the FDA, Dr von Eschenbach is responsible for leading the nation’s premier consumer protection and health agency, with regulated products that account for more than 20% of consumer spending. He is also the former director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and is nationally recognized as a urologic surgeon and oncologist. Prior to his appointment to director of NCI, Dr von Eschenbach served as executive vice president and chief academic officer of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He has been recognized and received numerous honors for his leadership and accomplishments including, but not limited to, “The Best Doctors in America” publications, the 2003 Carpe Diem Award from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Achievement Award from the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, and in 2006 as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people to shape the world.

Ms Tandy was nominated to her position as DEA administrator in 2003 by President George W. Bush. While in this position, she has expanded DEA foreign presence, entering the first intelligence sharing agreements with China and Russia. In addition, she deployed the first teams of DEA agents to conduct counter-narcotics operations in Afghanistan, and is responsible for the first United States extradition from Afghanistan and a more than 700% increase in the seizure of opium, heroin, and clandestine laboratories. Prior to her position as administrator, Ms Tandy was the associate deputy attorney general. Ms Tandy also served in a variety of positions in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice and was an assistant US attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia and Western District of Washington. Ms Tandy has received numerous awards and commendations including the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service and the Department of Justice Award for Extraordinary Achievement.

The Fall Legislative Conference will be held September 16-18 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA.

acpeNABP and the NABP Foundation are approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Provider Number: 205. Participants may earn up to 4.5 contact hours (0.45 CEUs) of ACPE-approved continuing education credit from NABP. Participants in continuing pharmacy education programs will receive credit by completing a “Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation” and submitting it to the NABP office. A validated Statement of Credit will be sent as proof of participation within approximately six weeks. Full attendance and completion of a program evaluation form for each session are required to receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a Statement of Credit.
