FDA Approves 2012-2013 Flu Vaccine, CDC Encourages Vaccine Awareness

Topics: Federal regulations and Vaccinations

On August 13, 2012, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the 2012-2013 influenza vaccine formulation has been approved. Additional details and links to information about influenza vaccine availability and related topics are included in an FDA news release.

As part of National Vaccine Awareness month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides updated consumer resources on www.vaccines.gov. Consumers can locate general information about getting vaccinated, as well as links to state resources for finding vaccination providers and paying for vaccinations. Detailed information about vaccines for adults and children is also available on the site.

Updated information for health care providers is also available on the Vaccines & Immunizations page of the CDC Web site. The page includes links to reports on the rising rates of pertussis in the United States, and the most current Tdap vaccine information for adults age 65 and older. Links to numerous provider tools and resources are also available. In June 2012, CDC sent a letter to pharmacists and community vaccinators, acknowledging their role in raising vaccination rates. CDC noted that pharmacists are “uniquely positioned to promote and provide vaccines to people in a wide range of communities,” and encouraged pharmacists to continue in efforts to increase awareness among patients about recommended vaccines and to provide vaccines as appropriate.
