Earn Up to Seven Hours of CE Credit While Learning from Experts in the Pharmacy Profession at the NABP 103rd Annual Meeting

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) 103rd Annual Meeting offers pertinent and timely continuing education (CE) sessions presented by some of pharmacy’s most knowledgeable and riveting speakers. Attendees have the opportunity to earn up to seven contact hours (0.7 CEUs) of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-approved CE credit. Sessions include a special pre-meeting session for compliance staff, two joint CE sessions, as well as two concurrent sessions: one geared specifically for state board of pharmacy executive officers and members and one geared for compliance staff. The Annual Meeting will be held May 19-22, 2007, at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower in Portland, OR.

Saturday, May 19

From 2 to 4 PM on Saturday, meeting attendees will hear from Clinical IQ, LLC President Eric S. Kastango, MBA, RPh, FASHP, during the special Pre-Meeting Compliance Officer CE Programming, “Inspecting Compounding Pharmacies: Beyond the Basics of USP 795 and 797,” which is sponsored by Walgreen Co and provides two contact hours (0.2 CEUs). Kastango founded Clinical IQ, LLC, a pharmacy consulting company, in 1999. He is a fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), has served on the ASHP Council on Educational Affairs, and has been a pharmacy surveyor for the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc. Since 1980, Kastango has practiced pharmacy in a variety of practice settings in a number of different roles, including as corporate vice president of pharmacy services for Coram Healthcare Corporation.

Monday, May 21

The first Joint CE Programming session, “Legal Update,” takes place from 8:15 to 10:15 AM on Monday and will be presented by Melissa A. Madigan, PharmD, JD, NABP professional affairs senior manager; Eleni Z. Anagnostiadis, RPh, NABP board services director; and Moira Gibbons, PharmD, JD, NABP legal affairs senior manager. The session is sponsored by CVS/pharmacy and attendees may earn two contact hours (0.2 CEUs).

Madigan has held the position of professional affairs senior manager for NABP since March 2006. Prior to this, she spent two years as an associate with the law firm of Smith, Rickert & Smith, and eight years as professional affairs manager for NABP. Madigan serves as pharmacy law co-instructor at Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy.

Anagnostiadis oversees NABP accreditation programs, as well as the Association outreach programs for its member boards of pharmacy. She works with the state boards of pharmacy to ensure that they receive the information and support they need to develop, implement, and enforce uniform standards for the purpose of regulating the profession and protecting the public health in their respective states. Prior to her position at NABP, Anagnostiadis was the executive director of the National Institute for Standards in Pharmacist Credentialing, where she was responsible for the overall management and growth of the organization.
As the legal affairs senior manager for NABP, Gibbons handles a variety of legal matters for the Association. She is also an instructor of pharmacy law and ethics at Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy. Prior to joining NABP in 2000, Gibbons was a prosecuting attorney for the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, primarily handling cases involving pharmacy licensees who violated professional practice regulations.

Tuesday, May 22

Attendees may earn 1.5 contact hours (0.15 CEUs) by attending one of the two sessions held concurrently from 9 to 10:30 AM on Tuesday. “Pedigrees are Here to Stay!” is an Executive Officer and Board Member CE Programming session sponsored by Merck & Co, Inc. Speakers for this session include Keith W. Macdonald, RPh, member, Nevada State Board of Pharmacy; Larry L. Pinson, PharmD, executive secretary for the Nevada Board; Louis Ling, JD, general counsel for Nevada Board; and Judi Nurse, PharmD, supervising inspector for the California State Board of Pharmacy.

Macdonald has represented the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy since 1988, serving first as the executive secretary for 17 years and now as a member of the Board. He is currently a pharmacist for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc in Carson City, NV. Macdonald has held various positions with the Nevada State Welfare Division including deputy administrator, chief – Nevada Medicaid Program, and pharmaceutical consultant/Nevada Medicaid. He owned and operated several small business entities through Macdonald Enterprises, Inc, where he developed the first unit dose delivery system for area convalescent hospitals and operated the first computerized pharmacy services in the community.

Prior to his appointment as executive secretary, Pinson served as the Nevada Board president from 1996-2004. He is currently a consultant pharmacist for several facilities in Nevada. Pinson owned and operated his own pharmacy, Silverada Pharmacy, for 22 years and has been an adjunct professor for the Idaho State University School of Pharmacy since 1989. He was appointed a member to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for the state of Nevada and is also a member of the Nevada Pharmacist Association.

Ling has represented the Nevada Board for more than 15 years serving first as the deputy attorney general where he also represented several other state boards. Ling has served as the in-house general counsel for the Board since 2000. He handles all legal matters for the Board, including prosecution of disciplinary cases, representation in litigation, supervision of the Board inspectors and investigators, drafting of regulations and legislative bills, and day-to-day legal and administrative matters.
Nurse has been a supervising inspector for the California Board since 2000 and an inspector for the Board since 1994. She manages the team of inspectors who inspect and oversee wholesale distributors licensed in California and participated in the development of the California e-pedigree legislation. Nurse has worked as a practicing pharmacist in California for 20 years, mostly in the long-term care industry.

The Compliance Officer CE Programming session, “Monitoring OTC Pseudoephedrine Sales: The Newest Tools,” which is also being held from 9 - 10:30 AM, is sponsored by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Presenting during this session are the Pharmacy Guild of Australia (Queensland Branch) Senior Vice President and National Councillor Karen Peachey, PhD, BPharm, PostGradDipClinHospPharm, AFACPPM, MASCP, MPS, and Branch Manager for the Compliance Section in the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP), Van L. Ingram.

A community pharmacist with more than 17 years experience, Peachey was involved in the implementation of Project Stop, a Web-based national monitoring system for the sale of pseudoephedrine being diverted for illicit drug manufacture. She is the chair of the National Pharmacy Guild Government Policy and Communications Committee and the National Pharmacy Guild Quality Care Pharmacy Program Committee. Peachey is also member of the National Pharmacy Guild Communicable Diseases Committee. Her current appointments include among others, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee and the Drug Utilization SubCommittee, and the National Drugs and Poisons Scheduling Committee.

Ingram joined ODCP in November 2004. Prior to joining ODCP, he served with the Maysville Police Department in Kentucky for more than 23, years serving as chief of police for the last six. He is a former president of the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police and was awarded the 2001 “Kentucky Chief of the Year.” He is a certified law enforcement instructor and has trained officers across the state on a variety of topics including community oriented policing, interview and interrogation, and time management.
The final Joint CE Programming session, “Quality of Care: Does Pharmacy Finally Get It? ISMP Talks,” which is 1.5 contact hours (0.15 CEUs), will take place from 10:45 AM to 12:15 PM and is sponsored by Medco Health Solutions, Inc. Michael R. Cohen, MS, RPh, ScD, FASHP, president of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and Charles R. “Chuck” Young, RPh, CFE, pharmacy manager, professional affairs, Office of Clinical Affairs, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Massachusetts Health Offices will speak during this session.

Cohen has been the president of ISMP since its inception in 1993. He also co-founded the national Medication Error Reporting Program. Prior to ISMP, Cohen held various positions in hospital pharmacies and was a clinical assistant professor at Temple University from 1976 to 1990. He has appeared on several broadcast and cable television shows and has received numerous awards. Cohen also has more than 100 publications to his credit.

Prior to his current position with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Young served as the executive director of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy. Young has served as both a member of the Executive Committee and as the NABP Treasurer. In addition, Young has served as an adjunct assistant professor of pharmacy practice. He has received numerous awards including the President’s Pharmacist of the Year Award by the Massachusetts Pharmacists Association in September 2000.

NABP and the NABP Foundation are approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Provider Number: 205. Participants may earn up to seven (7) contact hours (0.7 CEUs) of ACPE-approved continuing education credit from NABP. Participants in continuing pharmacy education programs will receive credit by completing a “Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation” and submitting it to the NABP office. A validated Statement of Credit will be sent as proof of participation within approximately six weeks. Full attendance and completion of a program evaluation form for each session are required to receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a Statement of Credit.
