DEA Prescription Drug Take-Back Days Part of White House Plan to Fight Abuse
Over 5,300 medication take-back sites across the nation participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Saturday, April 30, 2011. DEA coordinated drug take-back sites with local public health and law enforcement officials, offering convenient collection sites in every state and jurisdiction. The event continued efforts to prevent prescription drug misuse, abuse, and diversion and is part of the White House prescription drug abuse prevention strategy released April 19, 2011, by the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
As noted by DEA, the take-back event, aimed to rid the nation’s home medicine cabinets of neglected drugs, is one of four strategies for reducing prescription drug abuse and diversion laid out in the White House policy statement, “Epidemic: Responding to America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis” (PDF). The other strategies include education of health care providers, patients, parents and youth; supporting the establishment of prescription drug monitoring programs in all states; and increased enforcement to address doctor shopping and pill mills.
