DEA Drug Take-Back Day Approaching, Pharmacist Volunteers Needed at Collection Sites

Topics: Medication collection program disposal

Pharmacists may wish to support the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, to take place Saturday, April 30, 2011, by volunteering to help staff a medication collection site in their area. Collection sites will be open from 10 AM to 2 PM, providing consumers a safe means for the disposal of unwanted, unused prescription medications, including controlled substances. The event will continue efforts to help rid the nation’s medicine cabinets of these potentially dangerous, unwanted prescription drugs, thus helping to eliminate a major source of abused prescription medications. The first National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, September 25, 2010, saw participation from 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies and collected approximately 242,000 pounds of medications.

Pharmacist volunteers can assist at collection sites by answering patient questions and providing expertise on medications. The event also provides an opportunity for pharmacists to educate patients about the importance of safe medication use, the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse, and how appropriate disposal of unused medications can help stop prescription drug abuse. For information on volunteering, pharmacists may contact a site included in the DEA collection site locator. The locator may be accessed by clicking on the Got Drugs? banner at the top of the DEA home page. Those interested in volunteering may also contact their local DEA Division office. Additional information for patients about prescription drug misuse and abuse, medication disposal, and safe medication use is provided on the AWARxE Web site.
