Connecticut Signs MOU to Participate in NABP PMP Interconnect; Louisiana Makes Plans to Participate

Topics: Prescription monitoring program

The Connecticut Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) has entered into an agreement with NABP to participate in PMP InterconnectTM, currently under development. PMP Interconnect will facilitate the secure transfer of PMP data across state lines and on a national scale, enhancing the ability of PMPs to fight prescription drug abuse. Connecticut joins the North Dakota, Ohio, and Virginia PMPs, which have already signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) as the first step in participating in PMP Interconnect.

“Connecticut is pleased to join in this effort to enable timely interstate sharing of PMP data that will begin to address the unlawful obtainment of controlled substance drugs in multiple states, “ noted John Gadea, Jr, director, Drug Control Division, Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. He stressed further that “Abuse of controlled substance prescription medication for recreational or non-medical usage has become increasingly common, especially among teens and young adults. The ability to access this data, particularly in an area such as New England, where distance is not a deterrent in traveling to multiple states, is crucial.”

In addition, the Louisiana Prescription Monitoring Program Advisory Council passed a recommendation at its April 13, 2011 meeting that the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy should move forward with participating in the NABP PMP Interconnect. The council is composed of local, state, and federal law enforcement, prescribers of controlled substances, pharmacists, and state and national pharmacy organizations. The Board will consider the council's recommendation at its May 2011 meeting.

NABP will cover the annual participation fees for all participating states for at least five years, and it is the Association’s goal that states will never have to pay annual participation fees to participate in PMP Interconnect. In addition, NABP will cover all costs associated with the development and ongoing operation of PMP Interconnect. Implementation of PMP Interconnect is currently scheduled to occur by July 31, 2011. Those interested in obtaining more information on PMP Interconnect, should contact NABP Government Affairs staff at governmentaffairs@nabp.net.
