CDC Urges Stakeholder Collaboration to Curb Increasing Rates of Prescription Drug Abuse and Overdose

Topics: Prescription drug abuse

Stakeholders participating in the National Rx Drug Abuse Summit were encouraged by Dr Ileana Arias, principle deputy director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to focus on collaborative efforts to battle the epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Dr Arias stressed that “overdose deaths in the United States have reached epidemic levels” and added that “CDC doesn’t take the word epidemic lightly.” Speaking at the summit, Dr Arias indicated that CDC advises “a concerted public health and public safety approach . . . to curtail this epidemic,” as reported in a National Rx Drug Abuse Summit press release. Attendees at the summit included law enforcement, health care providers, state and national lawmakers, and regulators.
