CASA Study Concludes Half of High School Students Use Addictive Substances
A new report from Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) concludes that nearly 15% of all United States high school students have misused prescription controlled substance drugs. The report “Adolescent Substance Use: America’s #1 Public Health Problem," also concludes that almost half of all high school students are using addictive substances – primarily alcohol, but also cigarettes, marijuana, and prescription drugs – and of these, one in three is addicted. In addition, CASA found that many of these teens’ habits are influenced by adults in their home, as the survey also revealed that 34.4 million children under 18 live in a household where someone is a smoker, excessive drinker, using illegal drugs, or misusing prescription drugs.
