California Law Prohibits Sales of Dextromethorphan Products to Minors
A new law in California prohibits the sale of medications containing dextromethorphan without a prescription to persons under 18 years of age. The law effectively requires that retail staff request appropriate identification if a purchaser of a dextromethorphan product appears to be under the age of 25. The law also requires that entities selling dextromethorphan products use, if feasible, a cash register system programmed to direct staff to request identification verifying the purchaser’s age. The bill (SB 514) adding relevant sections to the California Health and Safety Code was signed by Governor Edmund Brown on August 31, 2011.
