Bill to Increase Technician-to-Pharmacist Ratio Under Consideration by Florida Legislature
In Florida, a bill (HB 671) that would increase the number of pharmacy technicians that a pharmacist may supervise has passed the state’s House of Representatives. Currently, a pharmacist may supervise up to three technicians with approval from the Florida Board of Pharmacy. Under the proposed legislation, each pharmacist could supervise up to six pharmacy technicians. Critics of the bill are concerned that the change could lead to an increase in medication errors, risking patient safety. Proponents contend that there is no evidence that a higher technician-to-pharmacist ratio affects quality, reports WFSU radio. The bill was passed by the Florida House and is with a Senate committee.
