Attendees to Assist in Shaping the Future of NABP During 106th Annual Meeting Business Sessions

Earn Credit through Timely CPE Sessions and Network with Peers

Set in Anaheim, the largest and most populated city of Orange County, CA, the NABP 106th Annual Meeting, Eureka! Partnering to Save Public Protection – Boards of Pharmacy and NABP, will provide attendees an opportunity to explore the remarkable sites Orange County has to offer while participating in important NABP Business Sessions, during which delegates elect new Executive Committee officers and members learn of proposed amendments to the NABP Constitution and Bylaws. In addition, attendees may earn up to six contact hours (0.6 CEUs) of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-approved continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit while networking with peers. The meeting will take place May 22-25, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Orange County.
 

Special Programs/Continuing Pharmacy Education

CPE designed to address current issues affecting the regulation of pharmacy practice will be available to attendees of the Annual Meeting. All Annual Meeting participants will have the opportunity to attend three joint CPE sessions as well as one of two concurrent sessions: one geared for state board of phar­macy executive officers and members and the other for compliance staff. In addition, there will be two non-CPE special programs.

The non-CPE pre-meeting special program, “Boards of Pharmacy and ACPE – Mining the Standards,” will take place on Saturday, May 22, from 2 to 4 pm. On Sunday, May 23, from 8 to 11:30 am, attendees will have an opportunity to earn CPE credit during the Educational Poster Session, “Innovative Public Protection Projects.” Later that day, another non-CPE special program, “NABP Programs and Services Update,” will be held from 4 to 5 pm. Sponsored by CVS Caremark, the joint CPE session “Protecting the Public Safety – Partnering CQI with Science,” will take place on Monday, May 24, from 8:15 to 10:15 am, and on Tuesday, May 25, two CPE sessions will be held concurrently from 9 to 10:30 am. Executive officers and board members may want to attend the session “State and Federal Agencies Protecting the Public – The National Practitioner Data Bank,” sponsored by Walgreen Co, and compliance officers may want to attend “Protecting Against Cargo Theft – Agencies and Industries Partner Together.” The last joint CPE session, “The Controlled Substances Act – A New Frontier,” will be held on Tuesday, May 25, from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm.
 

Keynote Address

Sharing his views on the future of health care, Health Care Economist Joe Flower will speak on “Health Care: Better, Faster, Cheaper.” Flower has been writing, speaking, and consulting about change and the future for nearly two decades. He is principal author of “Technological Advances and the Next 50 Years of Cardiology,” Journal of the American College of Cardiology (Vol. 35, No. 4, 2000). In addition, Flower has written frequently about genomics and the biotech revolution for, among others, HealthCentral.com and the American College of Cardiology. Flower is the author or coauthor of several books including Encyclopedia of Computers and Computer History (2000), China’s Futures (2000), The 21st Century Healthcare Leader (1999), and The Encyclopedia of the Future (1996). In addition to authoring three major health care compendia and several hundred articles, Flower is a contributing editor at Health Forum Journal and Physician Executive. His recent clients include DNA.com, the Global Business Network, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Defense. Flower is also a founding member of the International Health Futures Network. He holds a master’s degree from San Francisco State University, with postgraduate work in education at University of California, Berkeley. pm, during the First Business Session.
 

Special Events

The Hospitality Brunch, which is sponsored by Omnicare, Inc, and takes place on Sunday, May 23, from 8 to 11:30 am, will offer attendees a chance to network with their colleagues while enjoying a full buffet brunch. The brunch will be held in the same area as Educational Table Top Displays during which attendees can speak with representatives from federal regulatory agencies, NABP, and other associations, about important issues and programs.

Board members who have recently been appointed to a board of pharmacy, or those attending their first NABP Annual Meeting, will want to attend the Annual Meeting Orientation on Saturday, May 22, from 5 to 6 pm. The program offers a look at the events taking place and the procedures followed during the Annual Meeting.

Sponsored by Medco Health Solutions, Inc, the President’s Welcome Reception will also take place on Saturday, May 22, from 7 to 10 pm. In addition to honoring NABP President Gary A. Schnabel, RN, RPh, and his wife Tammy, the President’s Welcome Reception offers attendees the opportunity to catch up with old friends and acquaintances.

Meeting participants are invited to attend the NABP Executive Director Service Recognition Reception on Sunday, May 23, from 5 to 6 pm, honoring NABP and NABP Executive Director/Secretary Carmen A. Catizone, MS, RPh, DPh, for a collaborative 25 years of service.

In addition the NABP/USP Breakfast, sponsored by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention will be held Monday, May 24, from 7 to 8:15 am. Meeting participants are invited to attend the breakfast, which will provide an opportunity for both organizations to discuss timely and relevant topics in the practice of pharmacy.

The Association’s Awards Dinner Reception and Annual Awards Dinner, held on Tuesday, May 25, will conclude the Annual Meeting. The Reception will take place from 5:45 to 6:45 pm and the Awards Dinner will follow at 7 pm. The Annual Awards Dinner honors those individuals who have contributed their time and talents to advancing the principles of NABP and the practice of pharmacy. This special evening recognizes the efforts of the 2009-2010 NABP President and 2010 Honorary President, and the recipients of various NABP awards. Semiformal attire is required.
