Arkansas to Implement Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

Topics: Prescription monitoring program

Arkansas has adopted a law to require the development of a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) to be developed by the Arkansas State Board of Health. Senate Bill 345 was approved by Governor Mike Beebe on March 17, 2011. According to the law, the state’s PDMP will become operational March 1, 2013, if funding is secured. To enhance patient care and help prevent the misuse, abuse, and diversion of controlled substances, the law will allow access to prescription information by practitioners – including pharmacists and prescribers – and law enforcement agents, as well as other authorized individuals.
