1. What is the PSAM?
The Pharmacist Self-Assessment Mechanism (PSAM) is an evaluation tool
intended to assist pharmacists in obtaining objective, non-punitive feedback
on their knowledge base. The PSAM consists of 100 multiple-choice questions
and is divided into three sections of equal length. Pharmacists who complete
all three sections of the PSAM will receive a Record of Completion stating
their name and date of completion. The pharmacist should print this report
and keep it for his or her records.
2. Who should take the PSAM?
The PSAM is applicable to general pharmacy practitioners in all settings.
However, anyone who is interested may register and take the PSAM. There are
no eligibility requirements to take the PSAM.
3. How do pharmacists benefit from the PSAM?
To benefit pharmacists and serve as a learning tool, the end of each section
offers a feedback loop, which displays each question, the answer selected,
the correct answer, a brief rationale, and a reference where more information
relating to the topic may be obtained.
4. How is performance on the PSAM evaluated?
Upon completion of the PSAM, pharmacists will receive an unidentified Achievement
Report indicating the percentage of questions answered correctly in each of
the five content areas as well as the overall percentage of questions answered
correctly. The Achievement Report is separate from the Record of Completion
and has no identifiers of the test taker. Neither the Achievement Report nor
the Record of Completion will be provided to any other party.
5. Do pharmacists get to review the questions?
Yes, pharmacists will be able to review the questions in the feedback loop.
However, "going back" during the PSAM is not permitted.
6. Can pharmacists obtain a printed version of the PSAM?
No, currently the PSAM is only available as an online assessment.
7. How much does the PSAM cost and how do pharmacists
submit payment?
Each attempt at the PSAM is $75. Candidates will register online, and may
use any major credit card.
8. Can a pharmacist take the PSAM more than once?
Currently, there is only one form of the PSAM available to pharmacists, but
there are no restrictions for taking the PSAM more than one time.
9. What are the minimum system requirements to take the
PSAM?
To take the PSAM, a computer running either Microsoft Windows or Mac OS operating
system software is required and must meet the following system requirements:
- Internet Explorer 5.5 or above
(5.0 for Macintosh) or Netscape Communicator 7.0 or above, with text size

difficulties?
Please contact Promissor's Technical Support at 1-888-8ASK-CAT (1-888-827-5228)
should you experience any computer problems while registering for or taking
the PSAM.
11. How much time should pharmacists allocate to complete
the PSAM?
Each section can be completed in as little as one hour, but a maximum of three
hours per section is allowed. Pharmacists may take all three sections in one
sitting, or complete one section at a time, but once a section is begun it
must be completed in its entirety. All three sections must be completed within
30 days of when pharmacists begin the first section. Please allow an additional
15-20 minutes to complete the registration process and the exit survey.
